Christ's Table at the Center
Every Sunday at First Christian Church Jeffersonville, we gather around Christ’s table. As part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we celebrate communion every week because we believe the table is at the heart of our worship. Here we encounter the life of Jesus again and again as we participate in the grace, welcome, hope, and unconditional love that Christ continues to offer the world today.
Around this table, we are reminded that we are deeply loved by God and that we belong to one another. That belief is reflected in the very design of our sanctuary. Rather than placing a pulpit or stage at the center, the communion table stands at the heart of the worship space, with the congregation gathered around it. The table itself is square, with no head or foot, reminding us that we come together on equal ground. We see the table as the place from which our worship, and our lives, flow.

The invitation to Christ’s table is not based on church membership, certainty, or having all the answers. Whether you’ve never been to church before or have worshiped your whole life, whether you come with confidence or uncertainty, whether you’re holding long-held beliefs or asking questions you’ve never dared ask before, there is a place for you at the table.
We believe God’s grace is not reserved for those who have faith figured out. It is God’s gift, freely given to all.
The invitation belongs to Christ, not to us. We simply have the privilege of preparing the table and extending the invitation.
Each week, people of every age and every stage of faith gather around the table to receive the bread and cup, tangible signs of God’s grace.
How We Celebrate Communion
Most Sundays, the bread and cup are passed through the pews. We eat the bread as it is passed and hold the cup until everyone has been served so that we may share it together as one body.
On fifth Sundays and during Advent and Lent, we celebrate communion by intinction, inviting everyone to come forward, tear a piece of bread, and dip it into the cup before returning to their seat.
Whether communion is shared in the pews or around the table, the invitation remains the same: Christ welcomes all.
More Than a Meal
Communion reminds us that we are connected to Christ and to one another.
Around this table, we find grace, belonging, and community. Each week, we leave the table renewed to love our neighbors, seek justice, extend compassion, and follow Jesus together.
