Our Story
First Christian Church Jeffersonville has been part of the Jeffersonville community since 1830,
making it the oldest Indiana congregation to have been established from the Stone-Campbell movement and organized from its founding as a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Founded during the early years of the Stone-Campbell Movement, FCCJeff has worshiped in the Old Court House, a downtown sanctuary, and now our home on Middle Road. While our buildings have changed over nearly two centuries, our commitment to gathering around Christ’s table, serving our neighbors, and growing together in faith has remained at the heart of who we are.
In 1973, the congregation moved into its current sanctuary, embracing a design that was remarkably forward-thinking for its time. Rather than arranging the pews to face a stage, the sanctuary was built around the communion table. Today, that layout continues to shape our worship, reminding us that Christ’s table is at the center of our life together.
A Sanctuary That Tells a Story
The sanctuary is arranged in a broad circle around the communion table, creating a sense of closeness and shared worship.
From nearly every seat, you can see much of the congregation, a visual reminder that worship is something we do together. Ministers sit among the congregation because they, too, are part of the gathered community.
Surrounding the sanctuary, stained-glass windows fill the room with changing light throughout the day. The red windows to the east reflect the hopefulness of the rising sun. The blue windows to the south evoke the truthful clarity of midday brightness. The gold windows to the west speak of the peace of the setting sun. Above, stained-glass skylights echo those same colors, while the green and white glass at the north entrance recalls the mystery of the Northern Lights and the ever-present mystery of God’s presence among us.
The building itself reflects what we believe: Christ’s table is at the center, the congregation gathers as one community around it, and God’s light continues to meet us in every season of life. Even the original sanctuary remains part of our story, remembered through a stained-glass window that overlooks the Grace Center that connects today’s ministry with the generations who came before us.
